AVPK Sukhoi has flown the first Su-30 Flanker modified with canards as part of its programme to develop the Su-30MKI for the Indian air force.

The aircraft was flown for the first time earlier this month. Sukhoi has modified a basic Su-30, which has previously been displayed at air shows, rather than opting to build a new airframe.

The Indian Su-30MKIs are also intended to have thrust-vectoring Lyulka/Saturn Al-31 engines. The Su-30 testbed has had the rear fuselage modified and strengthened for thrust-vectoring powerplants, although it is not certain whether these have yet been fitted.

Observers have reported that the aircraft's tail-sting appears to be considerably elongated, and the two dielectric covers on either side of the sting also appear to have been reshaped.

These cover antennas which are thought to be part of the electronic-warfare suite.
