NASA has budgeted $17 million for fiscal year 1999 to begin a six year effort to develop and ground test a full scale powerplant for a Mach 2.4 supersonic airliner. Its funding will rise to $73 million in FY2000, followed by $97 million in FY2001, $118 million in FY2002 and $157 million in FY2003. The engine will be designed to be operated at up to 1,670ºC.
