Total passenger traffic at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport grew 43% year-on-year in November to 3.7 million, one year after the airport was temporarily closed by demonstrators.
Aircraft movements at Suvarnabhumi, Thailand's main gateway, grew 25% to 21,620, says Airports of Thailand. The airport's freight traffic grew 36% to 106,907 tonnes.
The strong growth is likely due to the absence of disruptions at the airport. On 25 December 2008, anti-government protesters stormed Suvarnabhumi, forcing it to close until 5 December, causing hundreds of flight cancellations and stranding thousands of passengers. Bangkok's Don Mueang airport was also shut, from 27 December to 5 December.
Apart from Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang, AOT also operates airports in Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Phuket, and Hat Yai.
Passenger traffic for all six airports grew 34% to 4.9 million in November. Total freight movements rose 33% to 113,189 tonnes.
