In Sweden, a limited-area anti-collision trial involving 40 ADS-B-equipped general aviation aircraft co-ordinated by VHF datalink mode 4 (VDL 4) will become operational in 2004 and 2005.

The Swedish civil aviation administration's enhanced GA operations by ADS-B trial involves fitting 40 light aircraft, gliders and balloons with GA-specific multi-mode transceivers made by Gothenburg-based Carmenta Air Traffic Surveyor (CATS). Meanwhile, terminal area control and up to four airfield towers will be provided with ADS-B surveillance capability via the VDL 4 link. CATS gives pilots a display showing real-time weather data and map displays with their own and other aircraft's precise position(s) on the taxiway/runway or in the air. VDL 4 allows flying clubs to track airborne aircraft. ADS-B will be provided to airport ground vehicles to allow tower or management control in poor visibility.
