Swissair is aiming to save SFr14 million ($10 million) a year and boost its environmentally-friendly image by cutting fuel consumption by 3%. It plans to achieve the reduction by reducing aircraft operating weights and improving operating procedures.

Studies conducted jointly by Swissair flight operations and US company Flight Sciences International have shown that the saving is feasible, says the airline.

The weight reduction will be achieved by changing materials carried on board, such as catering items, in-flight sales stocks and other cabin equipment. The airline says operational improvements will include modifications to climb procedures and route selection.

The 63-aircraft fleet consumed 1.6 billion litres of kerosene last year, at a cost of SFr470 million.
