SYRIA AND EGYPT are turning to India in an attempt to overcome logistics problems in supporting their aging Mikoyan MiG-21 Fishbed fighter aircraft.

Both countries have purchased spares from Hindustan Aeronautics for their MiG-21s, after experiencing difficulties in obtaining equipment from Russia.

Middle Eastern military sources say that $1 million-worth of spares have been shipped to the two countries. Additional contracts to supply them with airframe, engine and avionics spares are under discussion.

Russia has expressed its anger about the purchase from the Indian company, claiming that Russian companies should have been compensated.
