Airbus is aiming to deliver its first A320neo-family jet with the larger overhead luggage bins early next year.
The airframer says an A321neo in production at Hamburg became the first of the family to be fitted with the ‘XL Bin’, which is part of the ‘Airspace’ cabin interior being applied to the single-aisle range.
Airbus says the aircraft is set to complete its flight-test programme in January, before delivery to the customer. It has not identified the recipient.
The bins are part of an overhaul which also features new ceiling panels as well as structural reinforcements and modifications to systems including electrical circuits and air conditioning.
“Simultaneously the first ‘XL Bin’ for retrofit will also enter service,” the manufacturer says. The retrofit option is a separate scheme aimed at in-service A320s.
Airbus says the new overhead bins, supplied by FACC, will offer 40% greater capacity than the current design used on the type.
