Airbus has handed the contract to develop overhead stowage compartments for its redesigned A320 interior cabin to Austrian firm FACC.
The airframer had disclosed during the Paris air show that it would extend its 'Airspace' interior concept – previously aimed at the A350 and A330neo – to its single-aisle line.
Airbus had highlighted increased-capacity overhead luggage bins as part of the redesign.
Delivery of the overhead compartments – branded as 'Airspace XL' bins – as well as the ceiling panels, will become the responsibility of FACC under a contract it values at over €500 million ($595 million). The company says the panels will provide "uniform illumination" in the cabin.
Series production will commence towards the end of next year.
