Belgium-based Wifi Technologies is billing its shoebox-sized Air Streamer wireless IFE device as a sales tool that can turn aircraft cabins into "virtual hypermarkets".
Air Streamer is available to rent and requires no upfront investment from airlines. Once connected and installed on the aircraft, the wireless server streams content in high definition from its 5-50TB memory to up to 500 screens. This enables passengers to use either a seatback screen or their own devices to access movies, documentaries and TV shows.
In addition to entertainment, the product "offers airlines a new money-making function" by giving passengers the opportunity to order goods from extensive video catalogues during flight, taking delivery of their new purchases when they land.
"Aircraft can become flying virtual e-commerce hypermarkets, generating revenue on sales commissions and advertising, converting the system into a profit centre," Wifi Technologies says.
Airlines will be able to upgrade the technology when improvements become available as part of their rental agreement, with the result, Wifi Technologies promises, that "obsolescence becomes a thing of the past".
