Irkut has reached an agreement with United Engine over delivery of five Aviadvigatel PD-14 flight-test engines for the MC-21 fleet.

The agreement has been reached with the Perm Motors division of the engine corporation.

Perm Motors says the delivery of the PD-14s should commence by the end of this year.

"By this point the PD-14 should have received its certification from federal air transport authority Rosaviatsia," it adds.

The PD-14 is a rival to the Pratt & Whitney PW1400G powerplant for the Russian-built twinjet.

"Signing of the contract with Irkut is a solid step towards our engines lifting the newest Russian airliner into the sky," says Perm Motors chief Sergei Popov.

Flight tests of the MC-21 have, so far, only been conducted with PW1400G-equipped aircraft, although the PD-14 has flown on an Ilyushin Il-76 testbed.

Perm Motors says it expects flight tests with the PD-14-powered version to begin in 2019, adding that completion of the tests and type certification of MC-21 with the Aviadvigatel engines is planned for 2021.
