Rolls-Royce has started conducting high-power tests of the gearbox developed for its new UltraFan powerplant at its German facility at Dahlewitz.
The company is developing UltraFan for applications from 2025.
Its gearbox will enable the engine to deliver thrust efficiently over a range of power settings.
Rolls-Royce says the gearbox will be run at up to 100,000hp (74.5MW). The gearbox underwent tests on an attitude rig – simulating aircraft pitch and roll – in September last year.
"This latest achievement marks another milestone," says UltraFan technologies programme chief Mike Whitehead.
Manufacturing capability for the gearbox is being managed by a joint venture with Liebherr-Aerospace.
