Taiwan’s Civil Aeronautics Administration (CAA) plans to expand Taichung International airport's annual handling capacity to six million passengers in the coming years, through multiple projects.
The CAA plans to first invest NT$2.9 billion ($93.3 million) in building a third passenger terminal, construct new taxiways and expand the apron space.
This will then be followed by a separate NT$24.9 billion project for the construction of a new international terminal, runway, as well as additional taxiways.
It did not specify the timeline of the two projects.
The CAA notes that the passenger traffic growth at Taichung has been steadily increasing in recent years. Between 2013 and 2018, traffic has grown from 1.8 million to 2.6 million passengers.
The latest announcement is part of a wider raft of upgrades that the Taiwanese gateway is undergoing.
In March, Taichung added seven overnight aircraft parking stands to cope with traffic growth and boost operational efficiency.
Cirium’s schedules data shows that Taichung is served by 13 airlines, and is linked to 21 destinations in Asia. The top three carriers operating out of Taichung are Mandarin Airlines, UNI Air, and Far Eastern Air Transport.
