The Kuwaiti air force has formally accepted the Hughes Aircraft-developed preliminary early-warning system (PEWS). The system, initiated in 1992 following the liberation of Kuwait after the Iraqi invasion, provides the air force with surveillance of the nation's airspace and provides an "air picture" for civilian air-traffic controllers at the Air Operations Centre. The programme also involves, setting up a radar site to support a Lockheed Martin, FPS-117 long-range air-surveillance radar.
