The World Airline Entertainment Association's (WAEA) new Cabin Systems Task Force will take over airline cabin system standardisation efforts from the beginning of next year.

The team is identifying which standards need to be developed, how best to address them and who should fund the standardisation process, says Rich Salter, WAEA Board and WAEA-Technical Committee member.

The Cabin Systems Task Force will work closely with the WAEA-Technical Committee, WAEA Board and the in-flight entertainment (IFE) industry to develop the recommended cabin systems organisation during the third and fourth quarters of this year. The task force will be in place by the end of the year, ready to take over the development of cabin systems standards from January.

Cabin system standardisation is led by ARINC, the Airlines Electronic Engineering Committee and the WAEA, but with the cost of developing standards increasing every year, the WAEA and ARINC have agreed to reassess the way in which IFE standardisation is organised and funded. The WAEA has sent out questionnaires to airlines, to assess which areas of the passenger cabin need standardisation, says Salter.
