An Egyptair Airbus Industrie A320 taxiing at Cairo airport had more than 1m sliced off its tail fin by an Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 767-300ER which had just taken off in an incident which saw both aircraft come close to a major accident. The 767 (ET-AKW) was able to return for a safe landing and no-one was reported hurt.

The incident occurred at about 04:00 local time on 12 May, in visibility given as more than 10km (5.5nm) with a surface wind 4kt (7km/h) from the north west. According to a US Federal Aviation Administration preliminary accident data record, "-the Ethiopian Airlines 767 on departure struck and sheared off 4ft [1.3m] of the vertical stabiliser of the Egyptair A320 exiting the runway. The Ethiopian aircraft sustained damage to 3ft (1m) of its right wingtip and leading edge slats."
