Textron Systems will announce at Farnborough 2000 today that it has delivered its first Mobile Microwave Landing System (MMLS) to the Italian Ministry of Defence. The package includes ground equipment and spares. Italy is the first European NATO country to take the MMLS, the precision approach and landing system designed to support rapid deployment missions. Precision The MMLS, claimed to be the only one of its kind in production today, can be deployed to unprepared areas providing precision approach and landing capability. It is lightweight, can be operational in under one hour and provides Category II landing capability for aircraft equipped with MLS avionics. It was used widely by the US Air Force during the Kosovo crisis. Textron teamed with Marconi SpA for installation, maintenance, logistics and warranty support. We are extremely pleased to be providing this unique capability to the Italian MoD and consider this the first of many future deliveries into the international marketplace, says Tom Harrington, vice president, international military products at Textron Systems. He adds that the system offers the Italian MoD the unique ability to meet the operational requirements of both its air force and army with a single landing system solution and common logistics approach. Future MMLS deliveries to Italy are scheduled for July and September this year.
