The board of Thai Airways International board has approved the purchase of eight Airbus A340-500/600s. The deal will go ahead, with the aircraft being delivered from as early as 2004, following final approval from the Thai government. Thai wants the long-haul A340-500s and -600s for its Europe, China, India and US routes rather than continuing to rely on its Boeing 747-400s, which it plans to relegate to shorter-haul routes in Asia.
