Thai Airways booked a second quarter 2009 net loss of 5.4 billion baht ($158 million), up from a net loss of 9.3 billion baht a year earlier.
In the three months to 30 June total revenues declined 31.9% on-year to 34.6 billon baht, compared with 50.9 billion baht in the second quarter of 2008, says Thai.
ASKs fell 11.2% and RPKs fell 22.7% from the third quarter of 2008. Average load factors declined 16 percentage points to 60.2%, compared with 76.1% a year earlier.
Thai attributes the loss to a weak global economy, and concerns among travellers about H1N1 and Thailand's domestic political unrest.
"As a result, the company reduced its flight frequencies on regional and intercontinental routes to be in line with the market situation and those crises," says Thai.
