Thailand’s air force may buy a squadron of new search and rescue (SAR) helicopters and its army is preparing to launch a service-life extension for its Bell UH-1H Hueys.

Manufacturers expect the long-delayed acquisition of up to 16 new helicopters for a national SAR mission to start within two years. The AgustaWestland EH101, Bell/Agusta AB139, Sikorsky S-76 and S-92, and Kazan Mi-17 are being promoted for the project, now a top priority after natural disasters revealed fleet deficiencies.

Industry sources say the Thai army, which operates 100 Hueys, expects to receive funding for a service life extension of 16 aircraft.
