Thai Airways International is studying a possible joint venture arrangement for MRO unit Thai Technical's U-Tapao base.
Thai's president Charamporn Jothikasthira explained in an intreview with FlightGlobal that the joint venture study was based on a “government initiative”, and should be completed by the end of the year. Selection of a joint venture partner could then be made in 2017.
The potential arrangement would not affect Thai Technical's other operations at Bangkok Suwarnabhumi International and Don Mueang International airports.
The MRO unit has been approved to build a 24,000sqm hangar at U-Tapao, which would be capable of handling two widebodies and a smaller aircraft simultaneously. It plans to offer C- and D-checks on a range of different types from the facility.
Thai is also studying options to potentially separate its Thai Catering unit, which is expected to be completed in 2017.
