Sir - Your Comment "You have control" (Flight International, 9-15 October) was spot on about automated cockpits.

Twenty years ago, we did not need to fly with fancy autopilots or flight directors. We flew well with what we had and did so safely. That was because basic training had taught us to be pilots first. Most pilots of that era respond to automation with the idea that it is "-good stuff, but keep your eye on it".

The incidents described show a severe breakdown of airmanship, which quality appears to be fast disappearing as the cockpit becomes more automated.

Automated elements make wonderful tools of trade when used properly, and good servants when working well. A pilot instilled with a good dose of airmanship ensures that automation remains a servant.
