Flight 1A/R Nov 1997 Russia

Russian Functional Energy Block (FGB) launched on the Proton, to provide propulsion, guidance, communications, 3.2kW electrical power and thermal control. One front-docking system, with forward and lower ports, and one rear docking system.

Flight 2A Dec 1997 USA

STS88/Endeavour launches Node 1, equipped with two laboratory racks to be provided with 1.2kW power from the FGB. Has two pressurised mating Adapters (PMA 1 and 2). The PMA 1 provides access to the FGB and the lower PMA 2 provides later Shuttle-orbiter access.

Flight 1R Apr 1998 Russia

The Proton launches the Service Module with a five-port docking pod at front, which docks to the rear of the FGB and a docking port at the rear to accommodate Progress tankers. Based on the Mir 1 core module, it provides habitation and laboratory space.

Flight 2R May 1998 Russia

The Soyuz TM ferry Crew Transfer Vehicle docks at the lower front port of the FGB, to provide three-crew assured return or two crew, including one injured or ill person with medical equipment. The Alpha can now be crewed permanently for initial human-tended operations.
