Despite an acknowledged slow down in the programme, Indonesian manufacturer IPTN insists it is continuing with test flights of the N250 regional commuter aircraft and that certification will take place "by early 2002, at the latest."

Two prototypes are currently flying and require a further 800 flying hours for certification according to IPTN president S. Paramajuda, But he says that if the company can generate the US$90 million investment it is seeking, the process of certification can be speeded up.

The company has announced orders, here at the show, for its CN235 turboprop. Manila-based domestic schedule operator Asian Spirit will take delivery of three CN235s, one, on long-term lease, will be delivered next month, two others are on lease to buy terms. Options for another two are under discussion.

Contract

IPTN has also announced a contract with the Indonesian Air Force to re-engine three Eurocopter Super Puma helicopters.

It also announced re-structuring of the company. The core business of manufacturing commuter/ regional aircraft and military aircraft of the same class will continue to be the main revenue stream. But it will diversify and strive to capture opportunities in overhaul and maintenance through either wholly owned subsidiaries or mergers.

"We believe we can build on our existing capabilities and use them, not simply in our own manufacturing business, but also with other parties. It may be that we form partnerships with companies in other industries where our expertise is applicable," says executive vice president for Operation and Commercial, Ilham Habibie.
