China and Brazil are to develop a third Earth resources satellite, CBERS 3, for launch in 2003. CBERS 1 was launched by China in October 1999 and the second craft will be launched in 2001. CBERS has been built and will soon be tested in INPE laboratories in San José dos Campos. Brazil will invest $70 million in the CBERS 3 satellite and increase its overall contribution to the project from 30% to 50%.
