High fliers of the industry got the ultimate accolade last evening at a gala celebration in the Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore. Eleven trophies were presented at Flight International's Aerospace Industry Awards 2000, including the prestigious Aerospace Personality of the Year Award. The annual awards, launched at Asian Aerospace six years ago, recognise excellence and outstanding achievements in aerospace over the past 12 months. Guest of honour at the awards ceremony, attended by more than 500 top industry executives, was Liew Heng San, managing director of the Economic Development Board, Singapore. Here are the awards details in full.

AIR TRANSPORT (Sponsored by Lockheed Martin)

Airservices Australia: Implementation of a comprehensive advanced air traffic control system capable of dramatically increasing controllers' productivity while allowing greater densities of air traffic as numbers of flights increase. The first system in the world to introduce uniform all-electronic processing and presentation across all phases of a flight, delivered on time and within budget.

Boeing - Air Traffic Management Services Team: Bringing together airlines, industry bodies and regulators from all over the world and focusing on the practical benefits that the successful implementation of these advanced systems can deliver, to speed up progress in this critically important area.

DHL Aviation - Africa: Expanding its network to 29 countries, which involved the operator in overcoming the challenges of working with a wide variety of political, administrative and technical environments on the continent.

AVIONICS & AIRCRAFT SYSTEMS (Sponsored by Bombardier Aerospace)

Meggitt Safety Systems: Certification of the High Temperature, High Vibration Electrical Wiring to last the lifetime of an aircraft and to withstand temperatures higher than 2000oF and damage from vibration.

Rockwell Collins - Eye Squared S: Integrated information system from Rockwell Collins, which addresses the increasing complexity caused by the number of aircraft systems that need to establish datalinks with the ground.

UPS Aviation Technologies: Development and certification of the Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast (ADS-B) system, which allows aircraft to provide a constant picture of who they are, where they are and where they are going to similar equipment on the ground and any other aircraft in the vicinity.

CORPORATE & GENERAL AVIATION (Sponsored by BAE Systems)

Gulfstream Aerospace: Enhanced Vision System for the Gulfstream IV and V, bringing substantial improvements to the visibility from the cockpit, using an infrared imaging technique to allow pilots to see through fog, cloud and darkness.

Israel Aircraft Industries and Galaxy Aerospace: Entry into service of the first super mid-size business jet, pioneering a new category in the market place and attracting an order book worth more than $1 billion.

CORPORATE STRATEGY (Sponsored by Asian Aerospace 2000)

CFM International: Establishing and maintaining a 100% record for the delivery of its engines throughout a period in which demand has grown almost four-fold.

Spectrum Astro: Founded as a one-man operation and developing through the '90s into a specialist company, building its space systems around the best available components assembled into the least expensive product.

ENGINEERING (Sponsored by CFM International)

CTT - Zonal Drying System: Offering a new solution to the build-up of condensation in the space between the cabin and fuselage, using de-humidification techniques and dry air circulation.

Lockheed Martin Aeronautical Systems: Entry into service of the C-130J, to create an even more efficient, more reliable aircraft, now flown by a two-man crew using the first military head-up display certificated by the FAA as a primary flight instrument.

Bell Helicopter Textron and Lord Corporation: Certification of the vibration isolation system, which is stiff enough to support the rigid pylon of a helicopter and prevent driveshaft misalignment, yet able to absorb the constant vibration from the rotor mechanism.

MILITARY AVIATION (Sponsored by Rockwell Collins)

Lockheed Martin Aeronautical Systems: Redesign of the C-130J Hercules flight deck to reduce strain on the crew, with new engines from Rolls-Royce Allison and composite propellers from Dowty to enhance performance and efficiency of the aircraft.

PROPULSION (Sponsored by Smiths Industries Aerospace)

Lockheed Martin Tactical Aircraft Systems: Propulsion system proposed for the Joint Strike Fighter. Recognised as the biggest technical risk in the project, the engine's swivel duct doubles as an afterburner with low levels of observability.

SAFETY (Sponsored by Sextant)

Airbus Industrie: Production and availability of the Flight Safety Manager's Handbook, which draws together the experience of many flight safety managers to offer a practical working guide to any new flight safety officer.

British Airways: Evolution over a decade of a system which uses a worldwide computer network to capture and analyse all types of data relating to aircraft operation and maintenance.

Flight Safety Foundation: Bringing attention to the reduction of accidents during Approach and Landing with a target to reduce ALA accidents by 50% within five years.

SPACE & MISSILES (Sponsored by TRW Aeronautical Systems Lucas Aerospace)

Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control - Patriot Advanced Capability 3: A comprehensively upgraded, advanced defensive missile system which in 1999 demonstrated that it can intercept and destroy tactical ballistic missiles carrying warheads of mass destruction.

TRAINING (Sponsored by Airbus Industrie)

BAE Systems - Aerospace Training Solutions: On-time delivery of the Hawk Synthetic Training Facility to the RAF, made possible by a combination of public and private funding.

BAE Systems - Reflectone: The successful completion of another turnkey training solution for the RAF, this one built to service the needs of those who will fly the new C-130J based at RAF Lyneham.

Oxford Aviation College: Introduction of the first Joint Aviation Authorities approved, distance learning programme for the pan European JAA airline transport pilot, licence.
