A contract for the support of the Tornado GR4/4A of the RAF has been awarded by GEC-Marconi Avionics Support Division in Edinburgh - the biggest contract it has ever won.
The contract is for the augmented logistic support (ALS) of the new avionics fitted during the mid-life update of the Tornado from GR1 to GR4 standard. Described as an innovative and ground-breaking support contract, GEC-Marconi will work with British Aerospace and Smiths Industries and will be responsible for the overall management of ALS and oversee the setting-up of support units at RAF bases in both Germany and the UK. It will also operate an exchange service and repair unserviceable items at its factories in Edinburgh and southern England.
Additional engineering support, technical publications and training will also be provided.
The contract will run until 2003 and the RAF has an option to extend beyond that time.
