Russia's privately owned Transaero plans to add three Boeing 767-200ERs and six 737-400s to its fleet during 1997, in an effort to boost capacity until deliveries of next-generation Boeing 737s commence in 1999.
The first of the leased aircraft, a 767 and three 737s, are due to join the fleet in June, allowing an expansion of its northern summer timetable. The lessors have not been disclosed, although it is understood that the 767s are 1984-build, Pratt & Whitney JT9D-powered aircraft once operated by Egyptair. These aircraft have been traded back to P&W as part of Egyptair's order for PW4090 engines to power its Boeing 777s.
Transaero says that the 767 will be used on a planned Moscow-New York route, although it has not revealed which airport in the US city will be used, or when flights will begin.
