Research by credit card company American Express suggests that European business fares have risen steeply, but yields are under pressure on short-haul flights. London remains the most expensive of the major hubs for business travel to New York. However, its annualised 6% second quarter increase was half that at Amsterdam and Frankfurt. Matthew Davis, global director consulting services at American Express, says: "With few airlines operating on these high-demand, premium routes, and with the open-skies negotiations between the USA and UK stalling, continued fare growth is likely in the foreseeable future."

In short-haul economy class it is a different story, however. UK economy fares declined at an annual rate of 5.7% in the second quarter, while in Germany and the Netherlands there have been only small rises of 1.3%and 1.9%.
