Rolls-Royce has formally launched its Trent 900 project, to produce a 356kN (80,000lb)-class turbofan which could power future versions of the Boeing 747, and Airbus Industrie's proposed A3XX. The first Trent 900 core engine will be run in January 1998, and the first full development engine in September 1998. The Trent 900 will be ready for service in 2000 following certification in December 1999.
