Trimble Navigation will provide the US Army with global-positioning-system (GPS) receivers to equip light-utility helicopters under a $13.4 million contract. The GPS maker will build 785 so-called Cargo Utility GPS Receivers (CUGR). The self-contained, lightweight stand-alone GPS units will be installed in the Army's Bell Helicopter Textron UH-1 transport helicopters. The Pentagon says that the acquisition meets a congressional mandate to equip UH-1s with the GPS by the year 2000.
