TRW has delivered the first communications, navigation and identification (CNI) avionics system to the US Air Force for installation in the Lockheed Martin F-22A.

The CNI is a vital element of the integrated avionics architecture, allowing pilots to navigate to and from targets reliably, detect and avoid threats and to identify, and communicate with, friendly forces.

The modular CNI system, developed by TRW's San Diego, California-based Avionics Systems division, is capable of reconfiguring its components to counteract faults and failures, including those caused by battle damage, says TRW.

The company is also preparing an avionics bid for the F-22A Phase 1 production aircraft, which it says will be completed later this year. CNI systems are also under development by TRW for the Boeing-Sikorsky RAH-66 Comanche and the Joint Strike Fighter.
