Alenia and Lockheed Martin's new C-27J Spartan is to be rolled out in Turin tomorrow as the Italian-US collaborative project gathers momentum.

The new aircraft, which incorporates many of the modern propulsion, avionics, glass cockpit and other features of the C-130J, is due to fly before the end of the year, Lockheed Martin says.

Jointly-owned Lockheed Martin Alenia-Tactical Transport Systems is to market the modern version of the Italian G222 airframe to military and civilian users around the world.

All manufacture and assembly will take place in Italy, with worldwide support coming from the USA.

"It is a low-risk aircraft for customers who need a reliable platform," says Cesare Gianni, president of the joint Italian-US company.
