Ras Al Khaimah's troubled carrier RAK Airways is to attempt a relaunch of services by the end of this year.

Its latest chief executive, Omar Jahameh, is finalising plans to operate to destinations in the Gulf region, Africa and the Indian subcontinent.

Chairman Sheikh Omar Bin Saqr Al Qassimi says that the carrier had been affected by "exceptionally tough market conditions" arising from the economic downturn, forcing it to suspend operations last year.

But he says that this climate has "sufficiently abated", adding: "We are now ready to make a strategic re-entry into the market.

"We have a lot of exciting new plans, which will be unveiled soon."

RAK Airways had been operating Boeing 757-200 aircraft and also ordered a batch of Boeing 737-800s two years ago.

Al Qassimi says the deputy ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, part of the United Arab Emirates, sees the airline as a "key part" of a plan to increase tourism to the state.
