Australia's Queensland state government has launched a competition to design, build and fly unmanned air vehicles in an effort to raise awareness of the technology.
The government is offering a A$60,000 ($47,000) prize in the inaugural UAV Challenge - Outback Rescue competition. The UAVs will be tested in hypothetical situations, including dropping off emergency medical supplies.
"While this technology is already used in defence, we are only just starting to explore its everyday potential," says Queenlsand premier Peter Beattie. "The competition aims to raise awareness about the underlying technology, stimulate interest in studying it, and get more people thinking about how it can be used," he adds.
