UK aerospace production increased by 18.5% in the first quarter of the year compared with the same period in 2005, according to the country's statistics office's index of production.

In contrast, general manufacturing had a rise in production of just 0.7% this season. Within the transport equipment sector, where production rose 9.4% year-on-year, aerospace saw the biggest increase.

Society of British Aerospace Companies (SBAC) director general, Sally Howes says: "This is excellent news and reflects the hard work our industry is putting in to improving its processes throughout the supply chain. These latest figures are even better than we had hoped for. SBAC is driving the reinvigoration of improved productivity through its Supply Chain 21st Century Task Force."
