UK transport secretary Stephen Byers has announced £40m ($57.2m) aid for UK airlines to compensate for the losses they suffered after the 11 September. The European Commission (EC) is likely to approve the aid. EC commissioner Loyola de Palacio has said that the Commission would not obstruct compensation, as US airlines have already received lavish payments from their government.
