THE UK MINISTRY OF Defence (MoD) is planning to convert up to 44 of its Westland Lynx Mk7 helicopters to meet a reconnaissance-helicopter requirement for entry into service around 2000.

As part of the programme to meet Staff Target (Air) 1366, the MoD intends to test-fly a mast-mounted sight (MMS) on board the Lynx during the project-definition phase, say sources close to the programme.

The Lynx Mk7s will be available for conversion when the British Army Air Corps starts to receive its next-generation attack helicopter, for which a competition is in progress.

The introduction of the attack helicopter has also prompted the Army Air Corps to examine its future roles, including that of reconnaissance. A report is due to be submitted to the Chief of the General Staff's Office this month.

Besides fitting an MMS, the Lynx modifications would include integrating this with a mission-management system. Fitting the Mk7s with a turreted gun has been considered, but is believed to have been ruled out on cost grounds.
