In a high-profile show of support for the British aerospace industry, Prime Minister Tony Blair and Trade Secretary Peter Mandelson opened Farnborough International '98 yesterday.

"The Farnborough Inter-national airshow serves as a showcase event for the British aerospace industry. That the show receives visitors and exhibitors from all over the world is an indication of its importance," said the Prime Minister.

Blair also stated that government would not dictate how the industry should restructure but would work closely with industry partners to boost competitiveness in the global economy.

He outlined the importance of the UK maintaining its position as a major player in the global aerospace industry and recognised the importance that hi-tech manufacturing industries make to the British economy.

Over the past year, the Labour Government has invested £300 million in civil aerospace programmes and said there would be further spending, he said.

The Prime Minister also congratulated the SBAC for its plans to encourage young people to work in the industry.

It was the first appearance by a British Prime Minister at the show this decade, and Blair used the occasion to express his delight at the recent announcement of the British Airways order with Airbus.

"The order could not have come at a better time with the Farnborough show celebrating its 50th anniversary," he said.
