The UK’s Department of Trade and Industry is investing £4.3 million ($7.5 million) in a new centre of excellence in metrology for micro- and nanotechnologies. “It’s to help provide more functionality, more sensors, to further miniaturisation,” says the centre’s chief executive, Ayman El-Fatatry. The centre aims to accelerate the integration of micro- and nanotechnologies into products and processes, and has been formed by the UK’s National Physical Laboratory.

Technology company Qinetiq, metrology specialist Taylor Hobson, US microelectromechanical simulation provider Coventer and BAE Systems are also involved.
