Possible liberalisation of the air services agreement between the UK and Russia will be on the agenda when the two sides meet later this month.
The UK Department for Transport team will be seeking to end both over-flight tariffs applying to Russian airspace and the restrictions on over-flights to Asia. It will also argue for a lifting of bilateral restrictions on London-Moscow and London-St Petersburg services, and for elimination of the requirement for commercial agreements between those UK and Russian airlines that operate on the routes.
Under the current bilateral regime, routes between Russia and the UK are restricted to two carriers per country and limited to London, Manchester, Moscow and St Petersburg. Airlines are required to share revenue on the relevant routes.
Aeroflot, British Airways, EasyJet and Transaero operate all routes between the two countries.
