The Panavia Tornado GR4 mid-life update (MLU) programme for the UK Royal Air Force is approaching its halfway point, with 64 aircraft out of the planned total of 142 delivered to the RAF by the end of June.
Delivery of GR4s to front-line squadrons began in May 1998, with all 142 aircraft due to be upgraded by early 2003. The upgrade programme is designed to keep the aircraft in service until 2020.At the heart of the GR4 programme is an improvement for Tornado¹s sensor, computer, and weapon systems. The aircraft is receiving enhancements including a forward-looking infra-red (FLIR) system, an improved defensive aids system, improved cockpit displays and the ability to carry new weapons.
