The UK Department of Trade and Industry has made Spectrum Technologies' 10th birthday a very happy one, after shortlisting the company for a DTI export award for small businesses.

The company (Hall 3, A3) supplies ultraviolet (UV) laser wire marking and processing systems which are used in the production of electrical wiring systems, and has recently launched a new in-house wire processing job shop service.

Spectrum was founded in 1988 as a subsidiary of British Aerospace to "-commercialise innovative applications of UV technology".

Following a management buy-out in 1994, the company has won contracts with almost all the leading aerospace companies in the world.

Peter Dikinson, Spectrum's managing director, says: "I am delighted that the DTI has recognised the achievements of everybody here at Spectrum. The team has worked extremely hard to develop the company into a world-leading exporter of state-of-the-art industrial laser wire marking systems."

In 1995 Spectrum was awarded a Queen's Award for Export Achievement and the CAPRIS 50 UV laser was among the first millennium products to be selected under the nationwide initiative run by the Design Council.
