A £5 million ($9.3 million) joint UK academic-industry study into aviation's environmental challenges has begun. After a six-month key issues analysis, a two-year search for solutions will begin in January. The project, called Omega (Opportunities for Meeting the Environmental Challenge of Growth in Aviation), is funded by the UK's Department of Trade and Industry. The industry partners are Airbus, British Airways, Manchester airport and Rolls-Royce.
"With demand predicted to triple over the next 30 to 40 years, we need new ways of thinking," says David Raper, Manchester Metropolitan University's (MMU) centre for transport and environment director. MMU leads the project, which includes Oxford, Cambridge, Cranfield, Leeds, Loughborough, Reading, Sheffield and Southampton universities. It has links with a US Federal Aviation Administration-funded study.
