Political correctness appears to have arrived in at least one corner of the aviation industry.

In response to increasing requests from female aviators, the US army has commissioned a standard-issue helicopter pilot's helmet which, rather than coming in the usual four sizes, is made in six sizes.

The supplier of the modular helmet, Transaero Inc, has it on show on its stand at A654 along with other items of unisex pilot's apparel.

Transaero vice-president Charles Kane explains: "The increasing numbers of female pilots and crew members, particularly in the American military, means that the demand for helmets and suits which can be worn by both men and women is rising.

"The latest helmet will not only fit both sexes but, because of its modular design, can be used for any purpose. Whatever the individual needs of a mission, the appropriate attachments can be added to the basic model."

Also on show is the Sting Air Combat System of pilot suit and oxygen mask which, says Kane, allows the pilot to pull another three or four Gs without discomfort.

Frontier

This is the fourth visit to Dubai for Transaero Inc which sees the region as a 'last frontier' market.

"The growing number of American aircraft in the region is presenting us with major opportunities to have our equipment incorporated into the pilot ensembles," says Kane.

"Already the UAE airforce is using our advanced helmets and oxygen masks in its fighters."
