United Airlines plans to place its code on Germanwings flights in Europe in a new condeshare under review by the US Department of Transportation.
The Lufthansa-subsidiary would carry Chicago-based United’s code on its flights in Europe and to select points beyond Europe, an application with the DOT states.
United and Germanwings hope to implement the codeshare “as soon as they have obtained all necessary governmental approvals”, they say.
Germanwings has bases at airports around Germany except for Frankfurt and Munich where Lufthansa maintains hubs. The low-cost carrier operates mostly point-to-point flights from Germany to destinations throughout Europe.
It operates a of 41 Airbus A319s, nine Airbus A320s and 23 Bombardier CRJ900s, Flightglobal’s Ascend Fleets database shows.
United already codeshares with Lufthansa and is part of an immunised joint venture with the carrier, as well as Air Canada, between the Europe and North America.
