UNITED AIRLINES has placed a $14.6 million order for AlliedSignal Aerospace's enhanced ground-proximity warning system (EGPWS).

The US air carrier had previously won US Federal Aviation Administration approval to install the safety device in 12 Airbus A320s for evaluation. AlliedSignal says that the contract covers more than 400 aircraft operated by United.

The latest EGPWS deal brings total sales to more than 1,000. American Airlines and Alaska Airlines have previously ordered the EGPWS.

The system compares a digital database of the world's terrain with the aircraft's location and altitude to generate a map-like display of surrounding topography. It offers a 60s warning, compared with 10s for a traditional GPWS.
