Capt Peter Shaw has highlighted some of the inconsistencies of the Joint Aviation Regulations (Flight International, 5-11 November), one of which affected me, and doubtless many others around Europe.

I was obliged to retire well before my sell-by-date due to the fact that France will not accept the over-60s in the left-hand seat.

I suggest that those aviators now in their mid-50s who might have their careers prematurely terminated by the rule make a concerted effort to change it now.
