The first Astrium-built ESC-A cryogenic upper stage has been delivered for installation aboard the maiden Ariane 5 ECA vehicle due for launch next month. The ECA is based on the Ariane 4 H-103 upper stage and will provide the Ariane 5 with a 10,000kg (22,000lb)-to-geostationary transfer orbit capability, enabling it to carry two large communication satellites on one flight.
