Airbus says talks are under way with United Parcel Service (UPS) to defer its outstanding orders for new-build Airbus A300-600 freighters. News reports have suggested UPS recently notified both Airbus and engine manufacturer Pratt & Whitney that it no longer wanted "at least 20" of the nearly 60 A300-600Fs outstanding from firm orders for 90 of the type. It ordered the 90 aircraft in two deals in 1998 and 2001. "We do have a firm contract for 90 aircraft," says Airbus. "There are talks on rescheduling, but everything else is speculation." UPS declines to comment, but by the end of January had taken delivery of 32 A300-600Fs from the two deals.
