A SPECTACULAR ROUND of second-quarter results from the major US airlines has put the industry on course for the best quarterly results in its history.

The big nine network carriers collectively earned net profits of more than $1.5 billion in the quarter, on the back of soaring traffic figures, helped by suspension of the US ticket tax.

Profits for the big three carriers, American Airlines, United Airlines and Delta Air Lines, each came in at around $300 million, excluding restructuring charges and another round of debt repayments. Northwest and USAir also hit the $200 million mark. Most of the airlines are optimistic that the traffic boom will continue through into the third quarter.
